What is it that makes Diagnostic Medical Sonography an interesting career choice?
“Variety”, they say that it is the spice of life and variety is the reason many sonographers choose ultrasound as their occupation. Our patients come in a wide range of ages, size and conditions that make imaging a challenge. We perform a surprising amount of diverse exams daily from prenatal ultrasounds and scans of the solid organs of the body to neurosonology, interventional procedures and vascular studies. We are medical detectives on the trail of a diagnosis.
Diagnostic Medical Sonographers use computer technology along with a transducer (a hand held devise that houses a specialized crystal) to produce high frequency sound waves that enter the body and return to the transducer to produce quality images for the assessment and diagnosis of various medical conditions.
Sonographers routinely find jobs in hospitals, physician offices, mobile companies, temporary traveling agencies, veterinary offices, educational facilities and as application specialist for companies that manufacture ultrasound equipment.

ENGL 1101, MATH 1111 and (PHYS 1111k or PHSC 1011k) plus Option #1 Preferred (BIOL 2411k and BIOL 2412k) or Option #2 (*BIOL 1100k) *PLEASE NOTE: BIOL 1100k is an institutionally developed course that will not transfer outside of Albany State University nor count towards many other programs or degrees within the institution. For this reason, it is strongly recommended to the student to take Option #1 which includes the sequence of BIOL 2411k and BIOL 2412k in place of the offered BIOL 1100k. Taking BIOL 2411k and BIOL 2412k will improve your odds for being accepted into the career program as this science sequence is weighed higher than the BIOL 1100k alone. | ||||

Whether the student chooses to complete any of these classes prior to applying to the program (or waiting to take while in the career program) is an individual decision. However, it is important to understand that in addition to academic excellence, the more of these core classes completed, the greater your odds improve for being accepted into the career program of Diagnostic Medical Sonography when you apply. | ||||
